Some art historians say that Amedeo Modigliani’s artwork is Expressionistic; some say it is Modern Mannerism. The truth is, Modigliani’s art is like no other and does not fit into any category. He was an Italian artist at heart, and began his art studies like most Italian artists, by studying the paintings and sculpture of the Renaissance masters. But, Modigliani was also a perfect example of the tragic artist. Illness plagued him his entire life, and he loved the works of existentialists like Nietzsche. Tragedy was Modigliani’s affirmation of life.
